Greenhouse gases and energy

Greenhouse GasesScope 1 EmissionsScope 2 EmissionsScope 3 EmissionsEnergy Production and Energy ConsumptionThe greenhouse gases that are reported under the NGER Scheme include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), sulphur hexafluoride (sf 6) and specified kinds of hydro fluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons. When reporting emissions, energy production and energy consumption data, only those activities, fuels and energy commodities for which there are applicable methodsunder the NGER Scheme are reported. Greenhouse gas emissions are measured as kilotonnes of carbon dioxide equivalence (CO2-e). This means that the amount of a greenhouse gas that a business emits is measured as an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide which has a global warming potential of one. For example, in 2015–16, one tonne of methane released into the atmosphere will cause the same amount of global warming as 25 tonnes of carbon dioxide. So, the one tonne of methane is expressed as 25 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalence, or 25 t CO2-e.

Fact check: Do Australiagreenhouse gas emissions account

The ClaimThe VerdictGreenhouse Gas Emissions AccountingAustralia’s ‘Territorial’ Emissions Versus Global EmissionsFossil Fuel Emissions‘Exported’ EmissionsWhat Happens to Australia’s Fossil Fuel Exports?Australia’s Coal ExportsAustralia’s Gas ExportsCrude Oil and Refinery ProductsIn a recent speechto the United Nations, Prime Minister Scott Morrison sought to downplay Australia’s contribution to world greenhouse gas emissions, arguing the nation is responsible for just 1.3% of the global total. An alternative view is that Australia’s culpability is in fact much greater — after billions of dollars’ worth of fossil fuel exports are factored in. IT entrepreneur and outspoken climate change commentator Mike Cannon-Brookes issued a recent tweetclaiming that Australia’s share of the global total rises to more than 5% once the emissions embedded in its exports are included. “The science is clear,” Cannon-Brookes tweeted. “Coal is the #1 source of climate damage. Our world is at war & Aus is one of the principal arms dealers!” “As only 25m people, we generate + export over 5% of the world’s emissions today.” Is it correct that Australia is responsible for more than 5% of the world’s emissions if exports are included? On the Green Vehicle Guide (GVG), a higher CO 2 number means the car produces higher levels of carbon dioxide (CO 2) from the tailpipe. All new vehicle models up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass sold in Australia are tested to determine both fuel consumption and the level of CO 2 emissions emitted. The test produces three results for fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions - the ‘combined’, 'urban' and 'extra-urban' values.
